Angela Gheorghiu Announces Separation, Impending Divorce From Tenor Roberto Alagna
October 10, 2009

Soprano Angela Gheorghiu announced today on her website that she has been separated from her husband, tenor Roberto Alagna, for the past two years, and that months ago she began the process of legally dissolving their marriage.

The statement, posted to AngelaGheorghiu.com, says that the soprano's "attempts to save the marriage" during her separation from the tenor failed, and that "she awaits the finalisation of their divorce as soon as possible."

"Ms. Gheorghiu understands that Mr. Alagna is bitter about this situation," the statement continues. "As for her part, contrary to his declarations, she would like to live her life now with peace and tranquility."

News of the couple's split follows veritable years of speculation that was recently spurred when Gheorghiu withdrew from the majority of performances of the Met's upcoming new production of Carmen, citing "personal reasons"; those performances would have found her singing the title character opposite Alagna's Don José. Gheorghiu's statement followed the publication of a recent interview with Alagna in Le Figaro, in which the tenor admitted to being separated from Gheorghiu but claimed that she was not interested in a divorce.

Married thirteen years ago while they both were appearing in a run of La Bohème performances at the Met, the two singers parlayed their real-life pairing into something of a cottage industry by means of a number of high-profile recording and film projects, including CD and DVD releases of operas that included Il Trovatore, Carmen, Roméo et Juliette, L'Amico Fritz, La Rondine, Il Trittico, Werther, Tosca and L'Elisir d'Amore, as well as several recital and duet albums. During the 2008-09 season, both singers took part in Met performances of Nicolas Joël's production of La Rondine, while a June 2008 Met summer concert in Brooklyn's Prospect Park found them performing duets with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra and chorus, under the baton of Ion Marin.
