Radvanovsky, Di Giacomo Tapped to Sing the Role of Lina in Met's Upcoming Stiffelio Revival
October 07, 2009
The Metropolitan Opera has announced that sopranos Sondra Radvanovsky and Julianna Di Giacomo have been tapped to replace Angela Marambio in the company's upcoming performances of Verdi's Stiffelio. Radvanovsky will now sing the performances scheduled for January 11, 14 and 30 matinee, while Di Giacomo sings on the January 19, 23 and 26 performances. Both sopranos will assume the role for the first time at the Met.
Radvanovsky, who sang the role of Lina in 2007 Covent Garden performances of Stiffelio, is a graduate of the company's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. At the Met, she has already taken on many of Verdi's most demanding heroine roles including Elvira in Ernani, I Vespri Siciliani's Elena, Don Carlo's Elisabeth and, most recently, Leonora in last season's performances of Trovatore, which played in a new production by David McVicar.
Di Giacomo made her Met debut as Clotilde in 2007 performances of Norma, and has also performed the roles of Fiordiligi and Donna Elvira with New York City Opera. This past season, she sang Lucrezia in La Scala performances of I Due Foscari, a role that she has also taken on with the Opera Orchestra of New York.
The Met's revival of the Giancarlo del Monaco production of Stiffelio, which last took the company's stage in 1998, will feature a cast that includes José Cura in the title role, Andrzej Dobber as Stankar and Phillip Ens as Jorg. Plácido Domingo leads all six performances of the work.
