Music Director Markus Hinterhäuser to Leave Salzburg Festival, Effective 2011
July 20, 2009
Markus Hinterhäuser, music director and pianist at the Salzburg Festival, will leave his position in 2011, the Associated Press reports. After discussions with Alexander Pereira, Salzburg Festival's artistic director designate, Hinterhäuser will not renew his contract, which ends in 2011, citing only that he could not continue "under the offered conditions."
Hinterhäuser has held his current position since 2003. His contributions to the festival began in 1993, when he co-founded the festival's Zeitfluss series, which lasted through 2001. Since 2006, Hinterhäuser has planned the festival's concert programs.
The Salzburg Festival's 2009 season begins July 25.
