Francesca da Rimini

Approximate running time 3 hrs. 33 min.

Eva-Maria Westbroek and Marcello Giordani star in the Met's production of Zandonai's melodic gem, inspired by Dante's Inferno. Marco Armiliato conducts.

Eva-Maria Westbroek “exudes warmth and intelligence in the title role” (Financial Times).

Her “dramatic soprano and fine acting” captured “Francesca’s vulnerability in the softer lyrical moment, yet her voice had enough heft to accurately cut through the swelling orchestration” (AP) of Zandonai’s rare gem.

Westbroek’s “strong and powerful voice conveys all the passion and pathos of Francesca’s plight” (Huffington Post).

“From the moment the curtain rises you are awed by Ezio Frigerio’s towering, grandly detailed sets, designed for a 1984 resurrection of a work neglected since 1918. Franca Squarciapino’s costumes delight your eyes. Zandonai’s luxuriously orchestrated music caresses your ears. Conductor Marco Armiliato elicited fine playing of the gorgeous, resourceful score.” (New York Times)

“The production itself is sumptuous to look at” (Huffington Post).
