Mozart’s immortal parable is ideally served by the great Lucia Popp as Pamina, the young girl caught between filial duty, motherly rage, and the stirrings of first love. David Kuebler is Tamino, the fearless prince who sets out to win her, and Dale Duesing sings Papageno, the down-to-earth birdcatcher who longs for a wife of his own. John Macurdy and Zdzislawa Donat are Sarastro and the Queen of the Night.
