Dear Metropolitan Opera,

On behalf of my late Aunt Sarah, I am enclosing a check.

In today’s world it is a little sum, but in the life of my aunt it was a fortune. She died at 98, having shared her love of music with her family and friends. My aunt was a single “career girl” living in the Bronx. Well into her 80’s, she traveled to and from her evening operas in Manhattan on the subway. Her only luxury was her subscription to the Metropolitan Opera.

With her two tickets, she introduced the world of opera to her 14 nieces and nephews, her grand nieces and grand nephews and her girlfriends, some of whom had never been to an opera before she invited them. I have very fond memories of getting dressed up and traveling by train to meet my aunt for dinner and an opera. She made the whole experience a joyous and grown-up occasion which always included having ice cream at intermission at Louis Sherry’s on the Grand Tier.

I look forward to having grandchildren so I can continue my aunt’s tradition. Although the sum she donated seems small, her gift was tremendous. She shared her love of music with so many who carry on her legacy.

Sincerely,

Aunt Sarah Signature
