Making a gift from your IRA during your lifetime
The federal IRA Charitable Rollover Law expired on December 31, 2009. You can no longer move money from your IRA directly to the Metropolitan Opera without paying federal income taxes on it. However, there are still important benefits to using these assets for charitable gifts in your estate plan.
It will take Congressional action to extend the law. The U.S. House of Representatives approved a one year extension (H.R.4213) in December, but the Senate has not yet acted. We will follow the progress of this legislation and update our webpage with any new information.
The Met’s planned giving office is here to talk with you and your advisors about how this change may apply to you. Please call us at 212.870.7388 or email us at encoresociety@metopera.org.
