Tosca
Approximate running time 3 hrs. 0 min.
The opera is based on a play by Sardou, which was written for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. Sardou crafted melodrama rather well, and Puccini’s librettists distilled the play’s main attributes of action, sex, love, lust, politics, art and religion into one of the most popular operas of the verismo style. Most of the famous singers of the last hundred years have sung the principal roles, and have thrilled audiences with the famous arias (especially “Vissi d’arte” and “E lucevan le stelle”).
