Fidelio
Approximate running time 2 hrs. 30 min.
Beethoven’s only opera was heard for the first time in Vienna in 1805, but underwent several revisions, the final version being heard in 1814. It is typical of its time in several ways: it has spoken dialogue between the musical numbers; other operas on the same theme were heard in the city at the same time; and a “rescue” opera was very much in vogue. But it is unique in that all the other operas have languished by the wayside, while the universal theme of conjugal devotion inspired Beethoven to write music that is as great as that of his symphonies.
