Airs/La Sylphide — American Ballet Theatre
From the moment the curtain rises, a magical, fantastic world comes alive where demons lurk in murky forests of the Scottish Highlands, witches weave evil spells and a beguiling sylph lures a young Scotsman from his fiancée on his wedding day. August Bournonville’s timeless ballet is often considered the first Romantic masterpiece contrasting the earthbound world with the allure of the otherworldly. The great Danish dancer, Erik Bruhn, restaged this ballet for ABT to critical acclaim. Paul Taylor’s lyrical and uplifting Airs, performed to Handel’s score, opens the program.
