Lady of the Camellias — American Ballet Theatre
Approximate running time 2 hrs. 45 min.
La Dame aux camélias, the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas fils, has inspired many great artistic works, including Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, La Traviata, and George Cukor’s film, Camille, starring Greta Garbo. In turn, choreographer John Neumeier explores this endearing heroine, following Dumas’ original text about the renowned Parisian courtesan Marguerite Gautier, who falls in love with Armand Duval but is forced by his father to renounce her love to safeguard the family's honor. In this acclaimed ballet set to music by Frédéric Chopin, the choreographer achieves a rare humanistic vision of these characters with a genuine expression of their love, sacrifice and sublime heartbreak.
