Maria Guleghina to replace Andrea Gruber for season’s opening Tosca on Saturday, October 28

New York, NY (October 27, 2006), – Soprano Maria Guleghina, currently appearing at the Met as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, will sing the title role of Puccini’s Tosca in the season’s first performance of the opera on Saturday, October 28, at 8 p.m. She replaces Andrea Gruber, who is ill. Ms. Gruber is scheduled to sing the remaining performances of Tosca on November 1, 4, 7, 11, 14, 17, 22, and December 2, and to sing the title role of Puccini’s Turandot in March and April.

Ms. Guleghina has performed the role of Tosca at the Met 43 times, most recently during the 2004-05 season. She continues to sing the role of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana on October 30 and November 3, and returns to the company in April as Giorgetta in Puccini’s Il Tabarro in the new production of Il Trittico.
