Just in time for the holidays, the Met's abridged English-language version of Julie Taymor's hit production of Mozart's The Magic Flute will be released on DVD on December 18–and initially sold exclusively in the new Met Opera Shop. Taymor's staging, which returns to the Met stage on December 22, was featured as the inaugural transmission of the company's Emmy Award-winning Live in HD series in 2006. The release marks the Met's first self-produced DVD.

Conducted by Met Music Director James Levine, the 110-minute production, with English translation by J.D. McClatchy, was created to appeal to music lovers of all ages. Heading the cast are Ying Huang as Pamina, Erika Miklósa as Queen of the Night, Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, Nathan Gunn as Papageno, and René Pape as Sarastro.

The Magic Flute DVD is available for $25 in the Met Opera Shop. It is the ninth Live in HD production to be released on DVD, following Eugene Onegin (Decca), I Puritani (Deutsche Grammophon), The First Emperor, Hansel and Gretel, Macbeth, Manon Lescaut, Peter Grimes, and La Bohème (EMI).
