Radio & TV Preservation Project

The Metropolitan Opera’s history is a glorious one and nothing more eloquently communicates this legacy than the performance tapes in the Radio and Television Archives.

In recognition of the importance of these collections, in July 2000, The White House named the Metropolitan Opera Radio and Television Archives an official project of Save America’s Treasures. With over 1300 broadcasts in the radio archive, the library is an unprecedented collection of live opera performance in America. In addition, the Met’s television archive contains 100 opera telecasts.

To safeguard these priceless collections, the Met Opera has undertaken the preservation of the Radio and Television Archives by engaging the foremost professionals in audio and video restoration. To date, the Met has restored nearly one-third of the more than 1,000 Radio Broadcasts and approximately one-fifth of the Television collection.
