How do we get season tickets for the Met simulcasts
|

I've recently become a member of the Guild, at the "supporter" level. I've never been to New York, but a friend and I would like to attend the complete Ring Cycle next May.
A few questions:
What are the chances of getting tickets? When will they be available for purchase by "supporter" level members of the Guild? Is there a seating plan/price guide available on the Metopera site? Finally, will I receive some sort of "supporter" ID card to allow advance purchase of tickets for next season's HD performances at theatres here in Toronto? Thanks for your time and attention.

Dear Diva-
I am a travel professional who is interested in a position working for the Guild in their Travel Program- how does one find out when a position is available, and what are the procedures for applying and securing an interview? The Guild's Travel Program is exactly the type of opportunity I am most interested in!
Thank you in advance for your reply- I appreciate it!
Best regards,
Dennis Fury

Dear Diva: I am 21 years old and, although I have been singing for myself and my family since I was about 5, it was only when I reached 19 that I realized I would like to pursue a career in opera. Because of where I live, I have been very limited by resources, - proper vocal coaching and written theory (I have just found someone though who is willing to teach me theory and perhaps I can fast track).
For experience this Spring, I did enter two Music Festivals and did quite well (5 first place and 1 third place). I sang in Italian, Latin, French, German, and English.
Because of my age and lack of education in this field, I realize I should apply to (and hopefully be accepted) to an opera program before I can truly hope to join an Opera Guild and begin doing what I love to do - sing.
Do you feel that I am too old to begin this career choice, and what advice and support can you offer me?
I read one of the questions directed to you about possibly being considered as an extra, and this would interest me as well.
I am sorry that I was long winded.
Thank you for your time and comment(s).
Sincerely,
A. Wallace

I am 33 and planning my first trip to NYC for 2 weeks in June. I am thinking that my trip would not be complete without a trip to the opera. I'll be going by myself. Is this ok to do? Could you recommend a night of the week that would be most suitable for dressing formal? I want my experience to be memorable!

Dear Diva,
I am 27 years old and I'm contemplating a career in music, particularly opera. In college I took some basic theory classes and I studied German and a little Italian. My music reading skills are so so, should I attempt to go back to school and obtain a music degree in vocal performance or is it too late for that? Also what's the best source for finding a really good voice teacher? Diva, I really do appreciate your time and patience.
Sincerely,
Teneshya

I live in Ohio and I am seriously considering pursuing a career in opera. Other than vocal training, what else can I be doing to prepare myself (such as dance classes, etc) that will help me be successful?

Sorry for this dull question, but where I sit is very important to me. Can you please tell me where I can get or see on the computer a complete, seat specific (and maybe, price breakdown) seating chart or floor plan of the Met?
The house site has a very general abstract chart, and the one at the box office shows every seat but not price lines. AND, in New York box office people will not let one see their computer screen. (I've been told I would see things that I'm not supposed to see). They should just look at Covent Garden's EXCELLENT floor plan!

I have just started to learn about opera and would like some suggestions on books. I would like to understand the terminology used to describe voices and to pronounce terminology names and operas correctly. I just finished Renee Fleming's book and that was extraordinarily helpful. Hello again, Diva. I asked you last week if jeans would be acceptable for the opening night of Peter Grimes at the Met. Before seeing your response I decided to shop for dressy (or as you might put it, fancy) attire. As I told the woman who went with me to the opera, after writing you I felt uncouth (as uncouth as Grimes) asking if jeans were okay, and that's why I decided to go fancy and dressy. My companion, who is a psychotherapist, said, "See? Your inner diva gave you the answer." ;-)

Ms. Diva,
I currently hold a BA in Theatre Arts and am also a classical voice student - specifically a mezzo soprano. Recently, a number of opportunities have arisen and I may have more of a future in singing than I had once thought. My question is this - will my lack of an master's degree make any advancement beyond financially-challenged novice impossible? I have heard that a mezzo is generally harder to come by than a soprano. Is this true and, if so, is it possible that that will be my saving grace?

Dear Diva,
I am planning to travel to NYC with my mother and aunt this spring for their 70th birthdays to see La Boheme at the Met. This will be their first and probably only time that they will get to visit the Met, so I'm really hoping to get the seats right.
What are the seats in the side parterre boxes like in the back three seats? (Ie., 6, 7, and 8) Are the sight lines ok, and what is the sound like? Do you feel that the Grand Tier boxes are preferable to the side parterre boxes? Unfortunately, all the seats in the front grand tier are sold out, which is what I know you prefer. Also, do you have any suggestions on anything we must do to get the "most" out of the experience - we're very excited. Thanks!

Hi Diva, I am visiting New York in the fall as I think you call it (26 Aug - end Sept 2007) and want to do a number of things including an opera visit. Most of all I'd like to know where the lesser divas (junior singers) stay when they are appearing in New York. When I stayed in Wales, UK, i.e. in Cardiff, the welsh women who ran the bed and breakfast house was a character as well as a music lover, indeed a great fan and very knowledgeable on Welsh National Opera who used her rooms when in Cardiff. Also her rates were reasonable and the location was good. Failing that can I come and stay with you? Also I appeared as a non-singing extra for Opera Australia in Don Carlo could I do that at the Met, even for one night (I did the whole season of Don Carlo = 13 performances, naturally as a volunteer of course)?
Thanks for your time I will explore the guild pages more to seed if you have short term membership, kind regards David Geer, Sydney, Australia.

Hello Diva! We are thrilled to be coming all the way from Pittsburgh to attend Saturday's performance of The Sleeping Beauty. I am coming down to Sleeping Beauty on June 9th one child is only 3 years old

Please let me know if I pick these up at the coat room and/or do I need to reserve them ahead of time.

I am taking my 18-year-old daughter to a Friday evening performance at the Met in a couple of weeks. It's not an opening night, and she wants to wear her prom dress (floor length and very elegant). If we wear long dresses, will we be over-dressed? Would it be better to wear something less formal?

I have the CD of Christopher Hassell's English translation of The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar. It is sung by June Bronhill and conducted by Vilem Tausky and William Reid with the Sadler's Wells Opera Orchestra. While the CD is beautifully done and I can understand most of the words, there are a few phrases I just can't understand. I have been all over the Internet and a public library, but I cannot find the words to this translation and have become very frustrated listening over and over to these unintelligible phrases trying to guess what they mean to be singing. Can you help me???? Please????

We are subscribers at Opera Columbus (OH); it would be most meaningful to vist NYC and enjoy opera.

I have noticed that several opera companies around the country have begun offering podcasts that provide information about the operas in their season. It would be wonderful if the Met were to do this, both to provide plot summaries for the operas, and as a way to get to know them better. This would be especially helpful, since the Met made its partnership with Sirius known back in September, and because Sirius often gives its subscribers several opportunities to hear a live performance, the podcasts would be a great way to offer lectures to those outside of the New York area. Besides, those who can pick up the Saturday broadcasts could use these programs to gain more information before they hear that weekend's opera. Plus, met announcer Margaret Juntwait really knows how to make these operas come alive, and her knowledge would be an asset to these podcasts.
This leads to my question: Has the Met considered offering podcasts? If not, I think the time is ripe. Has there been any discussion about that?
Please pardon the long post, but I felt it was the best way to defend my arguments.

We're going to the opera to celebrate a birthday, and we're all sitting together in a box. The ticket guy who sold us our seats said, "you should have a bottle of champagne to celebrate". Can we really? I know that people in novels have drinks and even dinner in their opera boxes, but does it work that way still? Would we have to buy our bottle of champagne from you, or can we bring our own?

Hey gorgeous! I need some help or at least some good advice and suggestions: My Dad is a New York City boy - he loves the opera and is now living in Connecticut. They are in Mexico off and on until late January. I'm trawling the net for ideas, but your suggestions are welcome - they are free weeknights and matinee times. This is a long shot...but I am desperate. At the end of the movie Persuasion (starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, done in 1995 by the BBC and Sony Picture Classics), there is a small opera scene where Ann (Amanda Root) urges Frederick (Ciaran Hinds) who is leaving abruptly to "stay because the next song is a very beautiful Italian love song." The viewer is then treated to about 2 minutes of Italian operatic pleasure. However, I cannot find a shred of information about the song, what it is, who sings it, etc. I have tried every imaginable avenue. I am so in love with it, and have searched for so long to discover what it is and who sings it, that I am willing to pay a considerable fee, or buy a copy of the movie and send it to anyone willing to help me learn about it. Thank you for any help you can offer.
