Usually at final curtain calls the Prima Donna steps to the wings and brings on the Conductor for his bow, but I noted in THE NOSE, Paulo Szot brought out Maestro Gergiev (since there is really no Prima Donna in THE NOSE), I'm wondering what other operas at the MET might call for the male lead to bring out the conductor?

Afternoon Diva !
I was wondering if you havd any contact ifnromation on a Stanley Levine and or Patrick both worked at the Met in the 1960's and 1970's and also Victor who was starting in his carrer in makeup artistry .. I preformed for sveral years in child roles.. Madame Butterfly,Cav and numerous other ones
and as an adult I would like to thank them for all the lessons learned for the years I was there ( I was 5 years old in my first performance on stage it required special permission back then since, I was so young) .. lessons learned then have allowed me to be successful in life .. their words every so often .. 'the show goes on no matter what' ring in my head... any assitance in exetnding a thank you to them would be greatly appreciated. I live in our 50th State the past 20 plus years and think often to myself that it was a true pleasure working with them ! (since, I was a child last names I am not quiet sure I ever knew ! ) Aloha,

Hi opera Diva. I noticed an old post (12/16/05) regarding the tenor Mario Pasquetto who sang in the 40's and 50's. This is one of the greatest voices that nobody has ever heard of and it is shameful. There would be no Del Monaco if there was no Pasquetto. Anyway, I have a cd of live arias that someone gave to me. These recordings were obtained from the Pasquetto family themselves when this person visited Italy. I would like to share these recordings if possible for people to get an understanding as to how great this voice truly was. Any ideas?

My family and I are planning on attending La Traviata in April. We started looking for tickets kind of late so now there aren't very many available. There are four of us and we wanted to sit together. However, the only seats available for four are in the back and sides of the orchestra or on the very top in Family Circle. I was just wondering where you would recommend sitting based on sound and sight. Thanks so much!

Hi there, Diva!
I am a teacher at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Maine, one of the venues for the Met in HD. I have been giving the pre-performance lectures and am planning the one for Hamlet now.
My question is, can you suggest/recommend some books on Thomas and/or his Hamlet that might be similar to the Ellis-Peltz book on Verdi, the Budden series on Verdi's opera and the Osborne book on Verdi's operas.
Any and all information will be very much appreciated.
All the best,
Joe De Vito

Hi diva -- it took us three attempts to find a theater that had seats available so we could see Carmen in HD last night. The first two theaters were sold out and we found one 9 miles away in downtown Los Angeles. It was worth it. It was absolutely wonderful. The credits flashed by so quickly that we couldn't get the names of the cast. Could you provide a list of the members of the cast and something about their backgrounds. It will give us something to talk about among our opera loving group. Thank you very much for your help and of course to the Metropolitan Opera for these wonderful performances that we could not otherwise see and appreciate living so far away.

Dear Diva,
For a long time I have had a framed poster (printed on linen fabric) with the text:
Opening to Night, Monday Evening October 14th at 8pm, AIDA...
And then the role list, with Birgit Nilsson, Carlo Bergonzi, I Dalis, J Macurdy and others.
I wonder which year this was and if it was the first time Birgit Nilsson was singing AIDA at the Met?
I haven't been able to find this information on the net, so I wanted to turn to a reliable source = Diva.
Hope to get some more information.
With kind regards,
Tristan Troby

P.S. The poster is numbered 8 of 12.

I was an extra at the Met from 1963-1973

Although I do not currently work as a professional musician, I have had a lifelong passion for (and training in) vocal performance, particularly in choral music. What does it take to become a member of the Met Chorus?

I had a dear friend and teacher by the name of Dick Bryan (Richard S. Bryan)who peformed with The Metropolitan Opera during, I believe, the early-mid 1960s. By the time that I met him, his performing career had ended, and he was teaching in the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas, TX). He had a profoundly positive impact on my life, and the lives of many others. I would love to find information about his time at "The Met"... are there searchable archives of that sort of information?

We recently saw a production of "Madame Butterfly" in which people I would call "prop tenders" were used on stage. They were swathed in a grey-ish gauze fabric, including their mouths, indicating they were "invisible." They carried things such as baskets of rose petals, the knife, etc. Is there a particular name for this role?

Diva, I understand that although you are terribly busy, you don't need any help in responding to the myriad of questions you receive. Nonetheless, I hope you don't mind if I clarify things for the person who inquired regarding the purported death of the bass Ruggiero Raimondi. It's possible that the person was thinking of Gianni Raimondi, the tenor, who recently passed away.

Dear Diva, I would have sworn Sutherland's high C that I have a recording of Callas singing the Bernard Hermann aria from "Salammbo" that is part of Orson Welles's 1941 chef d'oeuvre "Citizen Kane." That is, until I mentioned it to a friend who insisted I was mistaken. Four hours and dozens of cd's and dvd's later, I conceded that he is right, but I still have this odd conviction that I have heard Callas sing that aria. Can you help me put this turmoil to rest?

Dear Diva, Two questions, one more timely than the other:
1 the time sensitive one:
I'm planning to go to the movies for the HD show tonight--the opening. I've been looking in Opera News for the usual timeline for the performance. How long the intermissions are etc. I'm trying to plan some snacks during the breaks for my group. Can you help?
2. Somewhere, sometime ago, I heard on the opera quiz or on an interview that "Stride la vamp" is the epitaph on the gravestone of a famous mezzo-soprano. Do you know which one? I thought it perhaps is on Verdi's grave, but I think it's on a mezzo's.
Many thanks, fred

Hi. I just read that Noelle Rogers was at the Met and City Opera around 1985. I know for a fact that she was contracted at the Metropolitan Opera and saw her there in rehearsals, but then she disappeared. Do you know where she went? There was also a video made of Clemenza di Tito with Eric Tappy in France. Is there any way of finding a copy of this video? There were also recordings for radio in Linz, Austria and Salzburg. I recall hearing her sing a high G abov high C in a concert there. I know this was also on radio. I was there when she sang with Placido Domingo in San Francisco and with Pavarotti in Pennsylviania. I wish I had some pictures. Thank you.

Dear Diva,
2 questions from a french Barberophile :
* What are the reasons of the terrible fate of the 2 operas by Samuel Barber ? (Vanessa, gloriously created in 1958, has never really entered the repertoire of the Met, and Antony & Cleopatra, awfully premiered in 1966 (and revived in vain in the 70s at the Spoleto Festival), has fallen into oblivion.)
* Do you know if the Met (or any other american theater) plans to stage one of Barber's work in 2010, for the centenary of this composer ?
Thanks, et longue vie à la diva ;-)

How do we get season tickets for the Met simulcasts

I've recently become a member of the Guild, at the "supporter" level. I've never been to New York, but a friend and I would like to attend the complete Ring Cycle next May.
A few questions:
What are the chances of getting tickets? When will they be available for purchase by "supporter" level members of the Guild? Is there a seating plan/price guide available on the Metopera site? Finally, will I receive some sort of "supporter" ID card to allow advance purchase of tickets for next season's HD performances at theatres here in Toronto? Thanks for your time and attention.

Dear Diva-
I am a travel professional who is interested in a position working for the Guild in their Travel Program- how does one find out when a position is available, and what are the procedures for applying and securing an interview? The Guild's Travel Program is exactly the type of opportunity I am most interested in!
Thank you in advance for your reply- I appreciate it!
Best regards,
Dennis Fury

Dear Diva: I am 21 years old and, although I have been singing for myself and my family since I was about 5, it was only when I reached 19 that I realized I would like to pursue a career in opera. Because of where I live, I have been very limited by resources, - proper vocal coaching and written theory (I have just found someone though who is willing to teach me theory and perhaps I can fast track).
For experience this Spring, I did enter two Music Festivals and did quite well (5 first place and 1 third place). I sang in Italian, Latin, French, German, and English.
Because of my age and lack of education in this field, I realize I should apply to (and hopefully be accepted) to an opera program before I can truly hope to join an Opera Guild and begin doing what I love to do - sing.
Do you feel that I am too old to begin this career choice, and what advice and support can you offer me?
I read one of the questions directed to you about possibly being considered as an extra, and this would interest me as well.
I am sorry that I was long winded.
Thank you for your time and comment(s).
Sincerely,
A. Wallace

Could you recommend a night of the week that would be most suitable for dressing formal? I want my experience to be memorable!

Dear Diva,
I am 27 years old and I'm contemplating a career in music, particularly opera. In college I took some basic theory classes and I studied German and a little Italian. My music reading skills are so so, should I attempt to go back to school and obtain a music degree in vocal performance or is it too late for that? Also what's the best source for finding a really good voice teacher? Diva, I really do appreciate your time and patience.
Sincerely,
Teneshya

Sorry for this dull question, but where I sit is very important to me. Can you please tell me where I can get or see on the computer a complete, seat specific (and maybe, price breakdown) seating chart or floor plan of the Met?
The house site has a very general abstract chart, and the one at the box office shows every seat but not price lines. AND, in New York box office people will not let one see their computer screen. (I've been told I would see things that I'm not supposed to see). They should just look at Covent Garden's EXCELLENT floor plan!

Hello again, Diva. I asked you last week if jeans would be acceptable for the opening night of Peter Grimes at the Met. Before seeing your response I decided to shop for dressy (or as you might put it, fancy) attire. As I told the woman who went with me to the opera, after writing you I felt uncouth (as uncouth as Grimes) asking if jeans were okay, and that's why I decided to go fancy and dressy. My companion, who is a psychotherapist, said, "See? Your inner diva gave you the answer." ;-)

Ms. Diva,
I currently hold a BA in Theatre Arts and am also a classical voice student - specifically a mezzo soprano. Recently, a number of opportunities have arisen and I may have more of a future in singing than I had once thought. My question is this - will my lack of an master's degree make any advancement beyond financially-challenged novice impossible? I have heard that a mezzo is generally harder to come by than a soprano. Is this true and, if so, is it possible that that will be my saving grace?

Dear Diva,
I am planning to travel to NYC with my mother and aunt this spring for their 70th birthdays to see La Boheme at the Met. This will be their first and probably only time that they will get to visit the Met, so I'm really hoping to get the seats right.
What are the seats in the side parterre boxes like in the back three seats? (Ie., 6, 7, and 8) Are the sight lines ok, and what is the sound like? Do you feel that the Grand Tier boxes are preferable to the side parterre boxes? Unfortunately, all the seats in the front grand tier are sold out, which is what I know you prefer. Also, do you have any suggestions on anything we must do to get the "most" out of the experience - we're very excited. Thanks!

Hi Diva, I am visiting New York in the fall as I think you call it (26 Aug - end Sept 2007) and want to do a number of things including an opera visit. Most of all I'd like to know where the lesser divas (junior singers) stay when they are appearing in New York. When I stayed in Wales, UK, i.e. in Cardiff, the welsh women who ran the bed and breakfast house was a character as well as a music lover, indeed a great fan and very knowledgeable on Welsh National Opera who used her rooms when in Cardiff. Also her rates were reasonable and the location was good. Failing that can I come and stay with you? Also I appeared as a non-singing extra for Opera Australia in Don Carlo could I do that at the Met, even for one night (I did the whole season of Don Carlo = 13 performances, naturally as a volunteer of course)?
Thanks for your time I will explore the guild pages more to seed if you have short term membership, kind regards David Geer, Sydney, Australia.

Hello Diva! We are thrilled to be coming all the way from Pittsburgh to attend Saturday's performance of The Sleeping Beauty. I am coming down to Sleeping Beauty on June 9th one child is only 3 years old
(do not frawn, she is intense and great listening to opera and ballet already therefore she is very good), and the other child is 8. We need pillows on the seats so that the children can see well.
Please let me know if I pick these up at the coat room and/or do I need to reserve them ahead of time.

I have the CD of Christopher Hassell's English translation of The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar. It is sung by June Bronhill and conducted by Vilem Tausky and William Reid with the Sadler's Wells Opera Orchestra. While the CD is beautifully done and I can understand most of the words, there are a few phrases I just can't understand. I have been all over the Internet and a public library, but I cannot find the words to this translation and have become very frustrated listening over and over to these unintelligible phrases trying to guess what they mean to be singing. Can you help me???? Please????

I have noticed that several opera companies around the country have begun offering podcasts that provide information about the operas in their season. It would be wonderful if the Met were to do this, both to provide plot summaries for the operas, and as a way to get to know them better. This would be especially helpful, since the Met made its partnership with Sirius known back in September, and because Sirius often gives its subscribers several opportunities to hear a live performance, the podcasts would be a great way to offer lectures to those outside of the New York area. Besides, those who can pick up the Saturday broadcasts could use these programs to gain more information before they hear that weekend's opera. Plus, met announcer Margaret Juntwait really knows how to make these operas come alive, and her knowledge would be an asset to these podcasts.
This leads to my question: Has the Met considered offering podcasts? If not, I think the time is ripe. Has there been any discussion about that?
Please pardon the long post, but I felt it was the best way to defend my arguments.

This is a long shot...but I am desperate. At the end of the movie Persuasion (starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, done in 1995 by the BBC and Sony Picture Classics), there is a small opera scene where Ann (Amanda Root) urges Frederick (Ciaran Hinds) who is leaving abruptly to "stay because the next song is a very beautiful Italian love song." The viewer is then treated to about 2 minutes of Italian operatic pleasure. However, I cannot find a shred of information about the song, what it is, who sings it, etc. I have tried every imaginable avenue. I am so in love with it, and have searched for so long to discover what it is and who sings it, that I am willing to pay a considerable fee, or buy a copy of the movie and send it to anyone willing to help me learn about it. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hi Diva!
I'm a guild member and have been trying to book two seats for Boheme's performance this November 25 (matinee). My fianceé and I love to eat at the Grand Tier Rest during the intermisions and this time we would like to lunch at the Belmont during the intermisions, as well. No matter how much I have tried, no one can answer me if the room will be open for lunch on that day. They gave me the Belmont's Room phone # to no avail since no one answer at any time. Do you know if in fact it will be open or not on such day for luch and how do we reach them to make a reservation for lunch during the intermision? We both have seen Boheme countless of time (we just happen to love the cast!), so if the Belmont will be open on Friday night, we have no problem in switching to The Barber on Friday 24. I would certainly appreciate your help.

I just went to Teatro alla Scala to see Lucia di Lammermoor. The only problem was I couldn't see anything from my seat, nothing. I admit I'm not an opera expert, but how common is it for opera houses to sell seats from which you can't see anything at all? Even the couple with the two "front seats" in my "palco" could see only 2/3 of the stage, and that was when they were leaning over the foot wide ledge. I could see 1/3 if I stood over one of them and craned my head way out. Since there was little to no action stage right, I just left, because it also seemed to me that the acoustics were bad from inside the walled palco. I enjoyed it more on CD in my living room.

Dear Diva, I am a 19 year old Vocal Performance Major and I have always dreamed of being a famous soprano at the Met. I'm from Minneapolis and for the past 2 years I've had the opportunity to watch opera auditions at the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul. I'm wondering when the 2006 audtions are scheduled - it may have been in January when I was out of town but I'm hoping I haven't missed and I believe there is another scheduled in the Fall. If you could let me know when these auditions will be happening next, I'd love to know.
I'm hoping that the Met is the correct opera to contact as MN Opera and the Ordway had no information available.
Thank you.

Dear Diva,
I am 22 years old and find myslef at the end of my college career. I majored in Anthropology, unrelated to the field of music, but have been playing the violin and viola since the age of 10 and was intially a violin perforamce major.
My question is, I have always loved to sing since I was small, and wished that I had the classical training as I do with my violin.
Is it too late to go back to school and pursue a vocal performance degree? If not, what schools do you think would be open to taking a serious dedicated 22 year old vocalist with no vocal training, good natural talent, and the ability to read highly difficult music? I dream and strongly want to become a performer in the opera, and would like to know the reality of my predicament.

Dear Diva;
I became a supporting member of the Met Opera Guild online today, and while I was looking around the website I found a job listing for an Admin Assistant - Major Gifts. My question is: Can you suggest the best way to apply for this job, since I have no real experience as an Administrative Assistant. Right now I work in mortgage underwriting for a major national bank and I make a good living, but to be a part of the Metropolitan Opera in a supporting, organizational behind-the-scenes type of position would be a true dream come true. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

My name is Nicole. I have recently been moved by the voice of Emmanuelle Gray Rossum, also reffered to as Emmy Rossum in the movie "The Phantom of the Opera". She sang beautifully and I read a biography saying that she had been in the choir alongside famous opera singers and taken instruction at the Metropolitan Opera. I know that someone else has already asked you if she was in your records, but the full name might help. My second question was if you had branches in Portland, Oregon. I would like to start an opera career at a young age. Thank you for taking my question. From: Nicole Marie Leggatt, 6th Grader.
P.s. The email below is my mothers, because I don't have one. And once again, thank you!

Whenever I go to see an opera, I am amazed at how the singer's throat never gets cloggy. You never see them cough or clear their throat.
Are they just REALLY good at hiding it, or do their throats not really get that way?
As a person who wants to sing opera when older, knowing how they get through it would be really helpful.

I was wondering if you should have any information on the tenor Henry Price with whom Beverly Sills sang frequently in the '70's? Why didn't he record anything? I also wonder why he wasn't recording with Sills?
I have now seen Sills/Price performances of Massenet's Manon and Rossini's Barbiere - recordings from the television, and they were superb in both of them. And it's really sad that such a wonderful, handsome, tenor with a wonderful beautiful voice isn't/hasn't been better known to the public, or has he? I suppose he is American, how popular or acclaimed was he?
I really hope you might be able to give me some more information on him, didn't find really anything from the Net.
Thanks a lot!!!

Hello Diva,
I heard Bill McGlaughlin of WFMT in Chicago a few weeks ago give his analysis of Wagner's Ring operas on a series of five hour long programs. He was excellent, not as stuffy as John Culshaw.
Bill mentioned the the Opera Guild has Peter Allens analyysis of the Ring. I have looked all over your website and cannot find it.
Bill also said that Peter Allen took two years to make his analysis.
Our household is a member of the Opera Guild and we would like to buy the CDs of Peter Allen's analysis.
We are: Anthony Kaney and Larry Dobbins
Diva, I hope you are having a good hair day.

I have always heard that the "w" in La Wally is pronounced like a "v", and that the stress is on the last syllable. Some friends of mine say that it's pronounced with a "w" sound, and that the stress is on the first syllable. Coincidentally, shortly after they said this, Henry Vogel said it twice on Opera Quiz the way I've always heard it. What is your authoritative answer?

Hence, does a MET performance with Borkh and Rysanek exist?!

Dear Diva--
I am a 28 year old opera singer who is ready to give up. I have been through it all. I have had cancer and my life has been a series of unfortunate events for the last 4 years. No one loves opera or wants to do this more than I do, but is that enough? I suppose my question for you is simple....what would you say to someone like me, just another soprano trying to make it?

I am 22 years old. when I was 16 I auditioned for the Opera in Virginia (of course nothing came of that :) When I was 18 I auditioned for a young choral and was accepted then I moved to sing with the symphony chorus and went to Europe. But for about two years now I haven't sung very much and when I do they are song way below my range and uncomfortable to sing. I am a lyrical soprano and want to be singing opera again. Is it too late for me? Have I ruined my voice?

Dear Diva, next month I'll be celibrating my 6th anniversary of my 29th b-day (35) and was wondering how much age plays in starting an Opera career? Often I read from singers on various forums that so-and-so belives that if you aren't performing at the age of 30, you are a has been. Is this correct? I've heard from serveral people, David Grabarkewitz and Sandy Sylvan (both during master clases) that age really doesn't play a factor, that the quality of the voice and the ablilitly to present an aria in a believable fashion is what really counts. Is this still true? I graduated from a small conservatory 2 years ago, and unfortunately the necessity to pay bills forced me to take a job on the 2nd shift. As you can imagine, I haven't done any performing since college. Am I a lost cause or can I still jump start something. Thanks.

I am a graduate student studying voice at Bowling Green State University in Oio. I am looking for information on Leontyne Price for my thesis! I wanted to review her AIDA and write about her attempt to idealize the story in her own way! I was wondering how I may write or speak with her of her management!

Are opera singers natural linguists? Can they really speak all the languages they sing in, or do they just learn the words?
Thanks

I'm an opera student at Florida State University and am trying to find biographical info about French composer Ernest Victor Moret (1871-1949). I think his opera 'Lorenzaccio' debuted in the USA at the Met in Octoberish of 1930. I've met with great difficulty finding out anything about this mystery composer. If there is any information that you can provide to shed some light on this matter, it would glady be welcomed and much appreciated.
