Ask The Diva

Question: Dear Diva, Here is a real toughie..... I was an extra at the Met from 1963-1973 and was there, in the flesh, when GianGiacomo Guelfi made an unannounced appearance as Scarpia during the first season at the New Met. Stanley Levine and I were watching from stage right and others who were there, also remember it, but I can find no record of this in the Met databank. Can you help? what was the date?

Diva: Sorry, there were only three performances of TOSCA in 1966-67 -- all parks concerts, in June and July. According to three different sets of annals, Giangiacomo Guelfi made his debut in 1970 and sang only two performances onstage -- TOSCA and FANCIULLA.
