Internship Opportunities

The Education Department Internship Program provides hands-on experience for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in arts administration or arts education.

Interns develop valuable skills by working alongside Metropolitan Opera Guild staff on Education Department programs. Each intern is matched with a staff member and program based on academic background, professional skills, interests and future career goals. By working closely with the supervising staff member, interns experience all aspects of arts administration and education, from daily administrative tasks to creating program proposals and publications

The Education Department offers three internship terms, each 12 weeks in length. The fall term typically runs from September to December, the spring term from January to April, and the summer term from May to August. Specific start- and end-dates are flexible, and are tailored to each intern’s school schedule and availability.

Expectations, Benefits, and Compensation

Full-time interns are expected to work Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm; part-time interns arrange their office schedule with their supervisor, and are expected to work between 15 to 20 hours per week. Additional hours for school visits, professional development sessions or other special events may also be required.

In addition to work for their particular program, interns are encouraged to attend performances, concerts, and other Guild or Education events. Interns are also encouraged to meet with Department and Guild staff for informational interviews. By taking advantage of these opportunities, interns establish a network of contacts within the professional field and gain a broad understanding of the multifaceted operations of The Metropolitan Opera Guild.

All interns receive a small stipend for their work, and are responsible for securing their own housing and transportation. Additional benefits may include: discounted tickets to Met performances, discounts at The Met Opera Shop and free copies of OPERA NEWS magazine.
